Edith is 3 Year’s old, she has an older sister Niamh (4) and a younger brother Leonard (1). Mummy Ashleigh is a nursery nurse and Daddy Stephen is a builder. We all live on the Wirral in the UK.

Edie is a hilarious little girl with a great sense of humour, full of love and life. She loves going to nursery, seeing her friends, visiting the park, anything to do with animals and she loves superheroes with super powers!

Edie had been suffering from headaches that got progressively worse and more regular over 6 months. After seeing her GP she was referred to consultant paediatrician at Arrowe Park. Edie was given the preliminary diagnosis of migraines but referred for an MRI scan just to be sure.

Results of the MRI scan came back that Edie had a ‘lump’ found in the brain stem. This is a part of the brain that cannot be operated on because of the location so far centre and the sensitive nature of the area.

The referral was made to Alder Hey children’s hospital and after more scans they have told us they are 95% sure that this is a brain tumour called a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).

DIPG is a rare brain tumour that occurs in children. The location in the centre of the brain means they cannot operate and surgically remove it. Here in the UK chemotherapy is not an option because the levels needed to treat this tumour would poison the rest of the body. Radiotherapy would alleviate symptoms, make her more comfortable and ease any pain but we would inevitably still lose her.

Although here in the UK our options are limited. There are alternative pathways for Edie abroad. At The Instituto de Oncología Intervencionista or “IDOI” in Monterrey, Mexico. They are leaders in intra-arterial treatment for brain tumors and are recognized for DIPG treatment.

They use a multi pronged attack, namely intra-arterial chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Nowhere else in the world is using this treatment and nowhere else in the world are having the results that they are. We have recently learned that a second child in as many months has just been given NED status (No Evidence of Disease).

These people are literally super heroes, changing people’s fate from a death sentence to life prospects. Making DIPG a previously incurable fatal disease a thing of the past.

Our current goal is to raise approximately £700,000 to cover the cost of flights and treatment for our Edie, which include specialised chemotherapy and immunotherapy but currently this is just a ballpark figure, she may need more, or less than the standard amount of treatments. However we would love to exceed this figure to enable us to help other children and families in the future.

To all of Edie’s superhero supporters, It’s been a long time since I last wrote a message to you all through Chuffed and I know you are all always thinking of our girl. It has been a very rough ride the past 2 months, there has been terrifying lows and uplifting, promising highs. We feel we have been hit with everything that can come at us and Edie has always come through stronger than ever. We admire her, our fighter. For those that don’t follow Edie’s social media or websites I’ll give a brief explanation to where we are upto now. Edie’s first treatment in January was successful with no complications and minimal side effects. Her second treatment was a different story sadly. The tumour responded very well causing a clear area of necrosis or tumour cell destruction! However, the following inflammation from the tumour blocked the natural drain for the CSF (Cerebral Spinal Fluid) causing it to build up in the brains ventricles. This condition is called hydrocephalus and can be fatal if left untreated. She started having symptoms that quickly got worse, such as difficulty eating and swallowing, trouble communicating and then the worst one was drowsiness! After speaking with the Doctors after the procedure they strongly recommended that Edie had a shunt fitted. A shunt is a device which allows the fluid from the ventricles to pass through a small tube which is routed under the skin and into the abdominal cavity where the fluid can safely drain away and get absorbed naturally by the body. So Edie has just had her 3rd Intra Arterial Chemotherapy along with her 2nd Immunotherapy last week and she initially came out of it great. However, the following day she began to show worrying symptoms, laboured breathing and difficulty eating. Here we go again. We gave Edie a nebuliser which helped at first and she seemed to be improving. ‪Until Saturday night‬, she had a restless night and woke up Sunday struggling again. After trying the nebuliser to no avail we decided it was a matter of urgency to take her to the hospital ER. We were right in making the decision as shortly after arrival Edie suffered a seizure. This was terrifying and to make it worse Edie was rushed away. They sedated her so she can get a full rest and took her for a tomography for a immediate look at her brain. There was no bleeding and her shunt that was previously fitted is working as it should. The scan showed Oedema (swelling) in the right hemisphere of her brain. This is believed to be the cause of the seizure. Edie has now had a full MRI today and we await some good news. Since the end of January Edie has been supported by the Bradley Lowery Foundation. This is a charity in the UK that was set up in Bradley Lowery’s memory to help children get treatment or medical equipment not available on the NHS. The Bradley Lowery Foundation doesn’t finance the children they support. They help source medical treatment, research, emotional support and fundraising advice, grants are available from them however this is in special circumstances and criteria’s are to be met. We are now able to use the Bradley Lowery Foundation registered charity number which allows us to receive tax free donations from companies/businesses. **Please note any donations through The Bradley Lowery Foundation need to state clearly “Edie Molyneux” Due to The Bradley Lowery Foundation using JustGiving as a crowdfunding platform we will be closing the Chuffed account on Monday 5th March.
